Kids are crazy about bugs! And kids and parents alike are crazy about the Bug Book and Bug Bottle. Packed with activities and packaged in its own collecting bottle, the full-colour book provides field notes to 47 bugs arranged by habitat, including pond, forest, ground, leaves, field, and flower. The ingeniously designed, safe plastic bottle is perfect for catching and viewing creepy crawlies, then letting them go unharmed(this is a bug kit with a conscience)!

Written by entomologist Hugh Danks, the Bug Book gives comprehensive information about these fascinating creatures - how they live, what they eat, unusual characteristics, and more. New to the kit are a fold-out bug chart for quick identification, a magnifier to see the critters up close, and a bug explorer's journal to record discoveries.

Discover how the whirligig beetle got its name, why fireflies light up, and how water striders walk on water. And then impress parents and friends - here are all the tools kids need to become bona fide bug experts!

Concise scientific explanations are included on how and why the experiments actually work. Each activity is straightforward and manageable, yet impressive enough to get anyone interested in science. Children (and adults, too) have become aware of the ecological importance of bees. Wasps are ecologically important, too. They pollinate plants and provide pest control by eating insects and feeding them to their young. Paper wasps construct open-celled paper nests. A mated female wasp -- the queen -- starts the nest by chewing wood fibers into a pulp to build paper layers. As soon as she has built enough of the nest, she lays some eggs which grow into young female wasps. They lay more eggs, mostly males, and these become workers whose job is to build the nest for the growing colony. It can end up being quite large. Come winter, the old queen and the workers die and the young females hibernate. In spring, they will be new queens that will build their own nest for a new wasp colony. This elegantly illustrated book explains stage by stage in easy text how a wasp nest is built. Cross sections show the amazing construction of the nest and how the wasps live and work.
