How to help kids relax their minds

Exciting news! We’re happy to team up with Michelle Faber, the CEO and Founder of Little Yogis, to provide simple yoga, breathing and meditation practices to help empower children to learn how to relax their bodies and minds.

Inspiration for meditation

“Did you know that incorporating breathing exercises into your daily routine can help calm your child’s nervous system while also helping navigate big emotions? When we are stressed, we tend to breathe short shallow breaths into our chests which triggers a stress response. However, taking long deep breaths into our bellies can help our bodies and minds calm down and will help us feel better.”

Worry bubbles for your troubles

“1. Have your child sit in a comfortable position with their back straight.

2. Instruct them to imagine they are holding a bubble wand.

3. Instruct them to breathe in deeply, imagining their bellies are filling up with air like a balloon. Then breathe out as if they are blowing a bubble through the wand.

4. Instruct them to breathe in again and notice a worry in their minds.

5. Instruct them to breathe out and blow their worry through the bubble wand. Imagine it forming into a bubble.

6. Imagine that the bubble pops and disappears. How wonderful!

7. Repeat until all of their worries are blown away.”

Fun ways to introduce kids to yoga

“Colourful and visual flash cards are a great way to teach children (especially the youngest yogis) yoga postures. Start by creating a family challenge and setting a goal. Do 5 new poses a day and before you know it you will all be yoga masters! One of my favourite decks is the Little Yogi Deck.”

Books are an amazing way to help kids learn yoga

“One of my favourite resources to teach my children OR my students about the ancient and beneficial practice of yoga & mindfulness is through books. By practicing the techniques together that are mentioned in the books, before you know it, your child can breathe and flow their way through their anxiety in no time! There are so many great options at Mastermind Toys right now, but my favourite books are definitely
Peppa Loves Yoga and I am a Peaceful Goldfish.”
