The word Mancala comes from the Arabic word naqala meaning literally "to move".

Mancala is one of the oldest known games to still be widely played today - archaeological evidence found in Jordan dates back to around 6000 BC! The spread of the game has been linked to migration routes which existed at the time. It spread from Egypt through other parts of Africa with traders moving up and down the Nile. Mancala arrived in North America with the slave trade, as the forcibly enslaved people brought their culture to America. Mancala is a 2 player game using a board which consists of 2 rows of 6 cups, with a scoring cup at each end. Each of the 2 players controls the 6 cups in front of them and the scoring cup to their right, with the objective to collect more stones than their opponent to win the game. Players collect seeds from cups and spread them counter-clockwise into the neighboring cups, including their own scoring cup. There is a wide range of strategies and tactics to learn to outmaneuver your opponent. With each game only requiring 5-10 minutes to complete, players can quickly develop their skills. Mancala has simple rules, but requires thought to win. This paradoxical quality is why Mancala has been played for thousands of years and remains immensely popular to this day!
