Top Books for Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—an opportunity to raise awareness, educate, end stigma, and offer support to all—including kids and caregivers.

Books are a powerful tool. Kids don’t always have the language to communicate what they’re feeling; reading helps little ones understand, learn, and find effective ways of expressing their emotions.

Through colourful illustrations, relatable characters, and mindful exercises, both kids and adults can share in the journey of understanding the importance of mental health.

Here are a few books to help start a conversation!

Just Breathe: Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement, and More

A fun and accessible how-to book to help with day-to-day challenges—including tips for leading a healthier, happier, and more connected life.

One day, Color Monster wakes up feeling very confused. He feels angry, happy, calm, sad, and scared all at once! As this adorable monster learns to sort and define his mixed up emotions, he gains self-awareness and peace as a result.

The Color Monster: A Story About Emotions

I Am Peace: A Book of Mindfulness

Breathe, taste, smell, touch, and be present. Expressive watercolour illustrations bring the tenets of mindfulness to a kid-friendly level.

A celebration of love in all its forms, I Am Love asks readers to look inward when they feel afraid. Love allows us to act with compassion and kindness, to live with gratitude, and to take care of ourselves by practicing self-love.

I Am Love: A Book of Compassion

I Am Human: A Book of Empathy

This picture book is a celebration of empathy and compassion that lifts up the flawed fullness of humanity and encourages children to see themselves as part of one big imperfect family—millions strong.

A beautifully illustrated collection of mindfulness exercises designed to teach kids techniques for managing their bodies, breath, and emotions—at home or on-the-go.
