Top Books for Pride Month

June is Pride Month; a time to celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community and promote equality, diversity, acceptance, and empathy.

Until recently, many families shown on TV or in movies, featured in books, and talked about in classrooms have not been representative of the diversity of real families and experiences. In particular, those who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, and additional sexual orientations and gender identities) had been left out.

Representation matters: it’s important for kids and teens who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ to have positive depictions in media and literature—to see themselves reflected and know they’re not alone. It’s equally important for young people to see those who look and live differently than they do, as it helps develop empathy, compassion, and understanding.

It can be challenging to talk to kids about diversity and inclusion (they ask tough questions)! Reading is a way to open the dialogue surrounding acceptance and identity while creating an environment for little ones to feel seen and heard.

Through diverse and inclusive books, kids can relate to characters, find comfort in illustrations, and identify words that feel right.

Books are also a great resource for parents and caregivers to learn more about and relate to their kids, growing along with them. Teach little ones that everyone’s journey is unique as they navigate the path of self-discovery.
